Lim, Eunyoung. Narrating the Oppressed Memory: A Reading of Kazuo Ishiguros A Pale View of Hills. Studies in English Language & Literature 46.3 (2020): 277-296. This paper aims at analyzing Kazuo Ishiguros debut novel, A Pale View of Hills, from the perspective of narrating the traumatic memory. The focus of the analysis is laid on the narrator of the novel, Etsukos narrative on her experiences with and observation of her friend, Sachiko, in Nagasaki, Japan. What makes her narrative interesting is that it is delivered while she is passing through the traumatic event of her first daughter, Keikos suicide. It is presumed in this paper that Etsuko with the strong pain of Keikos death narrates her past with the intention to relieve her pain and sense of her guilt through the seemingly unrelated story of her friend. I also place much emphasis on her narrative strategy of manipulating memory for self-protection and self-deception in the process of her narrating traumatic events. (Chonbuk National University)
