Lee, Youngzun. The Children Self-Actualization through the Needs of Safety and Belonging: Outside Over There and Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy. Studies in English & Literature 46.3 (2020): 233-251. This paper sets out to explain the need and self-actualization of children in the psychological views of Maslows theory of self-actualization. The discussion in this essay will be limited to children in the middle of the Pre-operation Period (aged 4 to 7 years) and the beginning of the Concrete Operational Period (aged 7 to 8 years). This paper focuses firstly on childrens safety need provided by family stability and secondly on the need of belonging through friendship, which are related to the second and the third stage of self-actualization. For this purpose, I will look at how a young girl fantastically fulfills her wishes for her family safety in Maurice Sendak's Outside Over There. Then, I will explain how a school girl depicted in Jacky Davis's Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy successfully makes a friendship by achieving a sense of belonging with her friends. These children achieve their self-actualization according to their different ages and development stages. (Hannam University)
