Park, Yunki. Reading Paul Austers The New York Trilogy from an Intertextual Perspective. Studies in English Language & Literature 46.3 (2020): 81-103. Paul Austers The New York Trilogy, a collection of three different novels, is an unique post-modern work constructed by the different literary influences. As such, intertextuality, a term coined by Julia Kristeva, is a significant literary tool in his work. Auster has been actually much influenced, especially as a translator of French poetry during his stay in France in the 1970s, by Maurice Blanchot who was a wellknown writer, philosopher, and literary theorist. His work has also been influenced by the American authors such as Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, and Edgar Allan Poe. In an interview with Joseph Mallia in 1987, Auster said that the influence of Samuel Beckett had been so strong that he couldnt see his way beyond it. This paper, therefore, will present an analysis of Paul Austers intertextuality from a theoretical perspective. (Paichai University)
