Kim, Mina. “Rereading Anse Bundren as a Poor White.” Studies in English Language & Literature 49.4 (2023): 1-21. This paper aims to reread a character, Anse Bundren in William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying. Many critics so far have mainly focused on Addie, and Anse has not received attention. If any, he has been negatively judged as a villain or a parasite. Anse was a hardworking young man when he courted Addie, a village school teacher. So this study starts from the question of why he has changed drastically in 30 years and focuses on his poor white surroundings. Anse, a poor white in the South of America, had to work harshly from childhood and that caused his physical deformity and disability. Moreover, he and his family were treated as white trash and degraded and even racialized in the class structure of the South. Anse, however, endures and overcomes all the hardships with his dogged determination and stands tall as a new head of the family at the end of the story. Given this, it will be pointed out that his idleness and lethargy are not a target of criticism but a survival strategy. (Jeonju University)
