Lee, Bokki. “Christminster in Jude the Obscure: A Community for Protecting Normalcy.” Studies in English Language & Literature 49.4 (2023): 129-146. This paper aims to analyze Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure from the perspective that the ghosts and phantoms in the novel reveal the instability of the current institutions and powers by erupting through the ruptures within them. In the novel, Jude, Sue, and Father Time are represented as ghosts and considered to be abnormal beings. As Ian Hacking has well analyzed the Victorian society obsessively classified the individuals according to their temperaments and tried to control them. In the novel, the characters considered to belong to the abnormal class are called ghosts, and the force to conjure them away from the normal community operates on them. To keep the current institutions and community stable and safe most individuals, from the scholars and landladies to the students, join to watch any abnormal activities performed by so-called ghosts. In the communities of Jude the Obscure, this mechanism of Victorian discipline and punish is clearly represented. (Jeonbuk National University)
